I assume Windows Vista has a similar procedure. Sometimes your system can get clogged down with too many icons in the System Tray. (This is helpful with Past Icons labeled as such.) Take care with those current icons, as those are the ones that are in your System Tray at the time you do your checking. Do an Always Hide, for those programs that you know you never use, or if you see a browser or program icon that you know you have long since uninstalled, select "Always Hide" and apply the changes. Look at your System Tray icons and decide what you really need and if you NEVER use an icon, but for some reason you have System Tray icon crap that doesn't leave after a program has been uninstalled, Right click on your Windows TaskBar, select Properties, than select Hide Inactive Icons so it is checked, than click Customize, and look at your current and past icons. So the tip is just because Windows designates something as INACTIVE does not mean it won't interfere with other programs. In an experiment I tried Always Show for the icons on the programs that I don't have anymore, (AVG 7.5, and Opera) Nothing appeared, so I changed those past icons to Always Hide and now Task Bar right-clicking seems to be faster. So what I did was I customized the Past Icons for AVG and Opera (which I used to have) as Always Hide. It turns out that AVG in their wonderful infinite wisdom keeps stupid little icons in your system tray that are designated by Windows as Hide When inactive, EVEN AFTER YOUR AVG IS UNINSTALLED. So I decided to look at my Taskbar icons. Well, I decided to look at my System Tray icons and the only active ones are Volume Control, my Avast AV icon, and my Wireless Network indicator. It would come and go and come back, as if something running in the background was depleting system resources. Recall the issue was momentary dark screens when right-click the Avast System Tray icon that would sometimes spread to my desktop when right-clicking. I used to have AVG 7.5 and completely uninstalled it because I heard mixed reviews on AVG 8.0 and wanted to try Avast. OK, further investigation shows that this might be the issue. I am also presenting this information to Avast's support team and the Mozilla Help Forums. Than I must do a reboot or turn off On Line protection and than turn it on again to fix the bug.Ī program bug fix may be needed for 4.8 to solve this problem. Rebooting the computer, which fixes the bug until the next Avast automatic update occurs with Firefox 3.0.1 open. Having Firefox 3.01 closed OR doing a manual virus database update with Firefox 3.01 closed does not reproduce the bug. The problems seem to begin when Firefox 3.0.1 is opened during an automatic Virus Database Update. UPDATE: The above problem with the right-clicking showing the momentary darkness by clicking on the Avast Ball in the system tray seems to resolve itself by turning off Avast on Line Protection and than turning it on again or rebooting the computer
